ManyParents Seeking Alternative Medicine Answers For Their Children
Posted on February 15th, 2010 in Health
What are parents searching for today? More advice on the internet? Answers from their healthcare provider?
These are all concerns that parents have to grapple with in today’s world. The trend is looking like more and more parents are seeking integrative medicine viewpoints and methods for the health and wellbeing of their kids and family members.
The increase in use of integrative medicine in the U.S. over the last 10 to 20 years has been dramatic, and the influence of the number of parents seeking out alternative health techniques tells us that they are relentless in their pursuit of answers for their kids.
What are we to make of this? Is it because the current healthcare system is all wrong and doesn’t serve the needs of today’s modern family? Or is it because the current medical system is incomplete in its strategy of mostly focusing on the physical needs and parameters found on lab tests and on X-Rays?
The main question that needs to be asked is – “What could possibly be missing from all of our technology and current knowledge that physicians and the public have access to?”
A recent study showed that over 50 percent of the 348 parents surveyed expressed a desire to discuss natural medicine with their doctor, and over 75 percent wanted to discuss these alternatives if they had already used some methods for themselves or their child. Surprisingly only 36% had actually discussed it with their doctor.
What can we conclude from these findings? Parents are interested in alternatives but feel reluctant to discuss or even ask about it because their doctor is unlikely or unwilling to listen to or agree with their decision to use natural methods for their kids. Another issue is likely to be one of time, as few physicians have the time to spend with parents talking about alternatives when there may be more pressing issues to attend to, like colds and flu symptoms, check ups, emotional problems, and medication changes.
The notable popularity of TV shows like the Dr Oz Show indicate that the tide may be changing, as more conventionally trained doctors are taking note and promoting the exploration of alternative medicine when it makes sense for their patients. Even some holistic physicians are changing their practices to better address the wants and needs of parents. Several places have incorporated integrative medicine programs into their children’s hospitals, including the University of Minnesota, Seattle Children’s, Boston, Chicago and Stanford to name a few.
Time is of the essence because children are growing and changing constantly. If our current media sources, which are dependent on the flow of information, can educate parents about all the choices available to them, the chances of finding the strategies and techniques that will work for each individual child’s condition will be much more likely, and parents will be more satisfied as they seek out the best for their kids.
Let’s hope that these changes are being noticed and acted upon by more parents and physicians and hospitals for the betterment of children’s health.
